What Is Whiplash And How Can It Be Treated?

Posted on

When you are in a car accident, there are a lot of different injuries that you can end up with. One of the most common, especially in a minor car accident, is whiplash. This injury can cause you to have a lot of pain and can take some time to get over it. If you think that you have whiplash, there are some easy ways that you can treat it.

Whiplash

Whiplash happens when your head is thrown forcibly and quickly forward and back. It stretches out all the muscles and tendons in your neck and can make it difficult for those muscles to do their work properly. To get an idea as to what whiplash is like, think of a bungee jumper. The jumper jumps off and rapidly falls to the full extension of the bungee cord. When it is stretched out just as far as it will go, then the jumper is rapidly slung back up. In this example, your head is the bungee jumper, but unlike the bungee cord, your neck isn't designed to stretch and snap back like that. Instead, you get whiplash, which can cause headaches, neck aches, and other problems. There are various things you can do to help deal with your whiplash.

Chiropractor

One thing that you can do to try and treat your whiplash is to go see a chiropractor. They will be able to do things like give you a therapeutic massage, do some adjustments, and do some manipulations. Those things can all help with reducing the stress and strain that has been put on the muscles of your neck and can help you manage the pain as well as help to put everything back into the proper adjustment, which will help support your head and neck.

Neck Brace

Another thing that you can do to try to treat your whiplash is to wear a neck brace. The neck brace will help keep your neck still, stable, and secure. That can give your neck time to heal while still lowering the risk of further injury happening, which could make the entire situation worse.

If you have been in a car accident, you may very well have had some kind of injury, and that may include whiplash. If you think that you have whiplash, you need to get in to get it treated at an auto accident medical clinic so that it doesn't get worse and so that you don't end up in a lot of pain.
